Last Friday, in an announcement overshadowed by the passage of the gay marriage bill, the mayor announced a deal on the city budget that prevented the layoffs of more than 4,000 teachers. Nevetheless, as a New York Times story today makes clear, schools will be facing budget reductions that will result in tough choices at each school. On the gay marriage front, if you followed the coverage you would have noticed the New York Times concentrated on the politics of gay marriage and the tabloids and broadcast media jumped to the issue of whether it would be a boost for wedding-related businesses. A column by Clyde Haberman of the New York Times pointed to a potential boon for lawyers–meaning divorce lawyers. The tabloids and broadcast media loved that angle.
